1. Write a project brief
Copy these prompts into a notebook or print this page and fill them in.
- Project and purpose
- What are you making or improving, and who will use it?
- Available space
- What measurements, access routes and clearances matter?
- Design or plan
- Which complete plan or manufacturer instructions will you follow?
- Constraints
- What limits your time, budget, workspace or experience?
2. Measure and verify
- Record the relevant dimensions and units.
- Measure openings, access and the space around the finished project.
- Check measurements against the plan before ordering materials.
- Note any conditions that require professional assessment.
3. Make a shopping and tool list
For each item, record: name, specification, quantity, estimated cost and whether you already own it. Include fittings, consumables, protective equipment, material waste and disposal.
4. Plan the sequence
- Read the complete instructions.
- Prepare the workspace and materials.
- Identify checks between stages.
- Allow for finishing, drying and cleanup.
- Record questions to resolve before work begins.
5. Choose a project to explore
Possible starting ideas include a small storage crate, desktop organizer, garden planter, garage storage layout or workshop shelving. Choose a complete design appropriate for the intended use; these ideas are not construction plans.
