Start your project brief ↓

1. Write a project brief

Copy these prompts into a notebook or print this page and fill them in.

Project and purpose
What are you making or improving, and who will use it?
Available space
What measurements, access routes and clearances matter?
Design or plan
Which complete plan or manufacturer instructions will you follow?
Constraints
What limits your time, budget, workspace or experience?

2. Measure and verify

  • Record the relevant dimensions and units.
  • Measure openings, access and the space around the finished project.
  • Check measurements against the plan before ordering materials.
  • Note any conditions that require professional assessment.

3. Make a shopping and tool list

For each item, record: name, specification, quantity, estimated cost and whether you already own it. Include fittings, consumables, protective equipment, material waste and disposal.

4. Plan the sequence

  1. Read the complete instructions.
  2. Prepare the workspace and materials.
  3. Identify checks between stages.
  4. Allow for finishing, drying and cleanup.
  5. Record questions to resolve before work begins.

5. Choose a project to explore

Possible starting ideas include a small storage crate, desktop organizer, garden planter, garage storage layout or workshop shelving. Choose a complete design appropriate for the intended use; these ideas are not construction plans.
